Comic Con in Dubai! – Where Geek gets Geek-ier!
This is where geek meets geekier. If you are a comic book, graphic novel and pop culture fan or even just a really big movie buff, the Middle East Film and Comic Convention (MEFCC or the middle east comiccon) on the 20th and 21st April was the place to be.
Whoever said that nerds lack social grace had clearly not been to a comic con. A bit of a geek myself, it was like walking into a room full of old friends- only make that a convention hall sized room. Everywhere I looked, there was a sea of people who were excited to come out and just be themselves- amongst others who got their comic book references, star wars jokes and manga enthusiasm. Comic book and manga fans spared no detail in gearing up as their most awe- inspiring superheroes. All the excited chatter at a fellow costumed visitor was “oh…he’s that guy from…” or “oh look! She’s come as her from…”
All of the excitement from meeting and greeting those from the same imaginary weird planet could only be escalated by celebrities from this same doodle-headed, askew planet. Meeting the likes of John Rhys Davies (known from is Indiana Jones as well as Lord of the Rings days), Laurie Holden (best known as “Andrea” in Walking Dead) and the stupendously charming Max Landis (screenplay and script writer of “Chronicles”, the movie as well as the “Death and Return of Superman” fame) was the most invigorating experience. One would almost find it hard to believe how humble, grounded and easy to talk to these celebrities are!
With activities planned all through the day- courtesy Vox Cinemas generous movie tent as well as a variety or workshops for learning digital and hand drawn comics, board game workshop stations and plenty of screens available for Prototype and Wii fans, the place was abuzz with energy and excitement. The works of the up and coming talent of the Middle East was also put on display in a fascinating array of merchandise from the world of comic books and manga. There were life size DC and Marvel characters, manga sketch sections, superhero themed stationery, artifacts, souvenirs, accessories and keepsakes galore!
All in all, there were costumes, there was food, and there was beer. Most of us couldn’t have asked for a more super-awesome day out with others like us!
Here is a interview, with Max Landis.. help put all in perspective!
