Major Decisions

By Aleena Khan

It is when we have to make those life changing decisions that we end up comfort eating, experiencing sleepless nights, bouts of extreme melancholy and generally going about our day with a pall of impending doom. Choosing which university to study at, and more importantly which major to choose are certainly examples of such life changing decisions.  Indeed, “on very tiny pivots do human lives turn.”

The future is a bleak lurking shadow just waiting to throw us in an even darker pit of confusion and angst. Or is it?

It is a big misconception to think that knowing exactly what you want to study at university makes you better than those who don’t. Talk to people from different fields, take introductory courses in all fields and widely explore your options. Do not hesitate to talk to professors as well as students that are currently studying in the programs you are interested in.

Also, do not hesitate to consider changing your major midway. Do bear in mind though that it will be challenging but it is still better to make this change sooner rather than later.

Remember that university is about educating yourself, not just getting a degree. Your major does not necessarily have to reflect what you have to do in the future, but should be what you are good at, which, most of the time, is something you enjoy. Broaden your minds and make full use of the resources the University will provide for you. Most importantly, try to be passionate about what you study and remember that these will be the best years of your life so make the most of it!
