Microsoft’s latest Buzz: Surface
Has Microsoft finally scored an advertising home run with its new Surface ad? Just 4 days after Microsoft uploaded the one-minute advertisement to YouTube, the video has already become a viral hit with with close to 1.6 million views and counting. And if the comments on YouTube are any indication, the ad is doing exactly what it was meant to do: persuade Techies to ditch their iPads and get on the Surface train.
The Surface ad, with its mostly monochromatic color scheme and musical accompaniment that is decidedly heavy on the bass, is a departure for Microsoft, whose advertising has generally focused on the human side of computing — think the ill-fated Bill Gates and Jerry Seinfeld campaign or those “I’m a PC ads.”
Surface has a magnesium body and is only slightly heavier than the iPad
In the latest ad, the new tablet is treated with a lingering adoration usually reserved for greased-up women in perfume commercials or expensive cars. You know, objects of visceral desire. Water droplets roll seductively off the tablet’s cover and tiny metal balls rain down over its springy keyboard. The ad shows off all the tablet’s curves. And Microsoft doesn’t kill the mood with any talk of specs or pricing, or a release date, or any talking at all. This is pure, unadulterated visual drooling.
