Events at London Summer Olympics 2012

The Opening Ceremony is a celebration which showcases the best of the Host Nation. It also features a parade of all the competing nations and the highly awaited entrance of the Olympic Flame, which ignites the Cauldron and signals the start of the Games.

The grand Opening Ceremony will provide an opportunity for the world to view the artistic expression of the Artistic Director, Danny Boyle and his team, and the culture of our Host City and the UK. There are certain elements that must feature in every Ceremony, as outlined in the International Olympic Committee (IOC) charter. The artistic performance of the Ceremony then gets underway and welcomes the world to the London 2012 Games.

The name of the Olympic Opening Ceremony show will be ‘Isles of Wonder’ and the worldwide broadcast will commence at 9pm. The Ceremony will kick off with the sound of the largest harmonically tuned bell in Europe, produced by the Whitechapel Foundry, and the Stadium will be transformed into the British countryside for opening scene ‘Green and Pleasant’, which includes real farmyard animals. The Ceremony will also include a special sequence celebrating the best of British, featuring volunteer performers from the NHS. Danny Boyle, Artistic Director of the London 2012 Olympic Opening Ceremony, said: ‘Our Isles of Wonder salutes and celebrates the exuberant creativity of the British genius in an Opening Ceremony that we hope will be as unpredictable and inventive as the British people.’

The Torch Relay Event

The event previously kicked off with the torch relay for 8000 miles usually done within 70 days before the opening ceremony. It was during the torch’s travel around London that the Queen waited at the Windsor Castle along with thousands of pupils from nearby schools who waved their own paper torches. It was torchbearer Gina MacGregor who brought the flame rain-soaked to Windsor. MacGregor was met by the Chairman of the London 2012.

On its 68th day, the Torch will have to travel from Harrow to Haringey as it will be carried by 153 proud torchbearers completing the 30.48 miles journey. People all over UK express their joy in witnessing the relay because they believe this to be an once-in-a-lifetime chance which may not happen again in the future. On its way towards Haringey, the Torch is said to pass by the Wembley Arena where the Badminton games will be held and to Wembley Stadium that will house the football competition. England’s best goal-seeker Gordon Banks will carry the prestigious flame in that area.

London Summer Olympics 2012 Security

The security issues have been brought up long before the torch visited various areas on London. According to the UK government, there was an initial failure of the G4S to provide the sufficient number of personnel to secure the athletes and participants. Three thousand five hundred troops have already been deployed to different event venues yet some critics say this number is still not enough to ensure safety. In defense, the G4S have claimed they were able to provide huge number of security personnel yet the real problem emerges from the fact that participants’ number was more than what they anticipated. At present, the government has drafted 500 local security groups to assist during the conduct of games.

London Summer Olympics 2012 Brand Rules

The London Olympics 2012 is governed by certain rules in which spectators and athletes are expected to comply with. People complain about brand rules being implemented for the conduct of the game. It was said that those who will be present at any event related to the Olympics should not wear or use anything that promotes the sponsor’s competitors which include McDonald’s Deloitte, Coca-Cola, Cadbury, British Airways and Adidas. Lord Coe explains that sponsors are given exclusive rights for marketing and sale of their services and products. He also said huge amount of funding can be generated from these sponsors which will be used to suffice for the Olympics’ expenses.
