EP Preview – The Veldt by deadmau5
The Man: Joel Zimmerman a.k.a deadmau5 needs no introduction. In the world of EDM, he is not just a musical genius but also an impressive artist as well as a great crowd pleaser. With his pulsating bass lines, progressive synths and epilepsy inducing light show, the fact that he is a World No.4 DJ according to the DJ Mag Top 100 poll, is not surprising at all.
deadmau5 has promised fans what will be the first of many up-and-coming EP releases. Titled The Veldt, the release is an audio tribute to recently departed sci-fi writer Ray Bradbury. For those of you who don’t know what EP is, it stands for Extended Play which briefly is a musical recording that contains more music than a single, but is too short to qualify as a full studio album.
His Weapon: The producer has pulled all stops with this release. Rather than releasing his tracks as Singles or as sub par EPs, deadmau5 has upped the ante with some stellar tracks both impressive in quality AND quantity. Throughout The Veldt, the name Chris James appears on a handful of tracks. The name may not ring a bell, and for good reason: James was originally just a fan of deadmau5 who was brought to his attention after uploading a version of title track and instrumental tune The Veldt with his own lyrics over the top.
His Plan: The day after deadmau5 made The Veldt, an amazing calming, progressive harmonic melody, he was being swarmed on Twitter with tweets from his fans eagerly informing him to check out a vocal version of his unfinished production on Soundcloud. When he heard it, he loved it and reached out to the vocalist Chris James instantly, saying that it was incredible and that he wanted to release it and Voila! The Veldt was created. This beautiful uplifting melody contains soothing instrumental repetitions that deadmau5 himself said would be nothing without Chris’s vocals. Both the production story and the final product of The Veldt is a great symbol of just how amazing the EDM world really is.
His Tunes: The EP consists of the Original track as well as 2 remixes of the same and a hip-hop track featuring Cypress Hill

His allies:
The first remix is by the Remix King and the Prince of Electro – Tommy Trash. Some might say it sounds too similar to his remix of Ladi Dadi by Steve Aoki, but you know what? It works! It’s absolutely the kind of track that pays homage to the original masterpiece at the same time makes it a Club Banger without spoiling it for the mass.
The second remix by Freeform Five – is a London based DJ, producer, songwriter Anu Pillai. Unexpectedly this track might surprise most listeners due to its genre bending intense sounds. Somewhere bordering between ambient house and chillout, but it does the trick, with very faint vocals and chords of the original. I must say this remix is a must listen.
Also featured in this EP are hip hop legends Cypress Hill, You might ask deadmau5 and Hip-Hop? What? Yes, you read it right, it shows the mau5 showcasing his ability to transcend genres as he defines them and he has done it well. A no frills, down to earth old school good hip hop sounds with 21st century twist and electronic sounds. Do give Failbait a listen.
The Veldt EP is a perfect preview for what we can expect in the series of EPs the producer has announced. The release will officially be ready to rock June 25, though you can listen to it on the rolling stones website by clicking on the below link:

His Achievement: In other news, deadmau5 is one of the first few EDM artists to grace the cover of Rolling Stones magazines, Summer Special issue, on newsstands this Friday, June 22nd. The cover story follows the producer-DJ born Joel Zimmerman as he travels by chartered jet from London to festivals in Norway and Sweden. Always outspoken, Zimmerman offers some brutally frank opinions about his EDM peers, Madonna and more. Do give it a read! The Mau5 says so!
