World Youth Day (WYD) is when the world gets a chance to meet with the Pope, which is typically celebrated every three years in a different country. The most recent World Youth Day was celebrated in Madrid from August 16th to 21st, and the next World Youth Day will be held in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil from July 23rd to 28th, 2013.

The festive occasion is open for all the young people who want to take the chance of meeting with their contemporaries centered on Jesus Christ. World Youth Day is an opportunity to experience in first person the universality of the Church, and to share a hope with the whole world for those young people who want to commit themselves to Christ and others. With this celebration, World Youth Day is known to be a unique way to deepen one’s faith and grow closer to Christ, by means of prayer and sacraments, along with thousands of other young people who share your interests and ambitions.

Historical Timeline

At the international forefront, World Youth Day is highly seen as a day where crowds of young people flood the city streets. In 1984, at the close of the Holy Year of Redemption, over 300,000 young people from around the world responded to the invitation of His Holiness John Paul II for an International Jubilee of youth on Palm Sunday in St. Peter’s Square. During this gathering, the Holy Father entrusted to the youth what is now known as the World Youth Day Cross to be carried throughput the world as a symbol of love of Christ for humanity.

Preparations for World Youth Day

There are two different types of preparation for the World Youth Day- spiritual and physical. Many people are undergoing different preparations for the World Youth Day, which is 410 days away from now. A few of the spiritual preparations are “World Youth Day pilgrims prepare for Brazil”, where people are walking miles from dawn until midnight, sleeping on gym flows, and navigating foreign streets in crowds of millions. These are just a few of the hardships pilgrims face when they head to World Youth Day. Young pilgrims are preparing now for the journey ahead. One of the physical preparations is the concept of “Fundraising Ideas”, where groups of people took part in various activities- a few of them being:

  • Selling free-trade coffee after mass on Sundays
  • Recycling
  • Raffle, where people wrote up a specific form letter to be sent to businesses asking for donations, send it out country wide to anyone and everyone, sold 1000+ tickets to raffle of all the great donations
  • Cinnamon Bun Sale, which was done monthly, and the entire weekend was spend in preparing homemade cinnamon buns as ordered.
  • Parish Pledge
  • Sponsor a mile program, where the distance the group will travel and have people sponsor a certain amount of distance will be measured
  • Sponsor a pilgrim, where people were asked to donate money for a specific pilgrim.

There are a total of 22 different physical causes in which people are participating as a preparatory cause for World Youth Day. For more of these causes, look at the following link: http://worldyouthday.com/fundraising
